What is Liothyronine?

Liothyronine is a synthetic form of T3, the active thyroid hormone your body uses directly at the cellular level. While most thyroid medications contain T4 (which the body must convert to T3), Liothyronine delivers T3 directly—making it useful for patients whose bodies don't convert T4 efficiently, or who still have symptoms on T4-only therapy. It's prescribed alone or alongside levothyroxine to optimize thyroid hormone levels. Because T3 acts faster and clears more quickly than T4, it may require twice-daily dosing.
