What is Lialda (mesalamine)?

Lialda is a prescription extended-release mesalamine tablet used to treat and maintain remission of mild to moderate ulcerative colitis. Mesalamine is an anti-inflammatory agent that works locally in the lining of the colon—where UC inflammation occurs—rather than systemically. Lialda's unique MMX multi-matrix delivery system releases the medication gradually throughout the entire colon, targeting the full extent of colonic inflammation with once-daily dosing. It's the first mesalamine formulation approved for once-daily dosing, which simplifies the treatment regimen compared to older 3–4 times daily formulations.

Local colonic anti-inflammatory action

Mesalamine inhibits prostaglandin and leukotriene synthesis in the colonic mucosa, reducing the inflammation that causes the bloody diarrhea, cramping, and urgency of ulcerative colitis—with activity concentrated in the colon rather than systemically.

MMX extended-release delivery

Lialda's multi-matrix technology creates a hydrophilic and lipophilic matrix that releases mesalamine progressively throughout the entire colon—ensuring drug reaches both the left and right colon where UC inflammation may be present.

Once-daily remission maintenance

Approved for once-daily dosing to induce and maintain remission, Lialda significantly reduces the daily pill burden compared to older mesalamine formulations—improving long-term adherence in a condition that typically requires ongoing therapy.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Lialda used for?

Lialda is an extended-release mesalamine tablet used to both induce and maintain remission in mild to moderate ulcerative colitis — reducing inflammation in the colon lining responsible for the bleeding, diarrhea, and cramping of UC.

Why is once-daily Lialda significant?

Older mesalamine formulations required dosing 3–4 times daily. Lialda's once-daily dosing significantly simplifies treatment for a condition requiring long-term medication adherence — a meaningful quality-of-life improvement.

How long before Lialda induces remission?

Clinical trials showed meaningful improvement within 4–8 weeks of consistent once-daily use. Some people achieve remission faster; others may need longer. Maintenance therapy continues after remission is reached.

What side effects might I experience?

Headache, abdominal pain, nausea, and diarrhea are most common. Kidney function can be affected with long-term use — periodic monitoring is recommended. Mesalamine-induced colitis — a rare paradoxical worsening — should be reported if it occurs.

Can I take Lialda with food?

Yes — Lialda should be taken with food to improve tolerability. Swallow tablets whole; do not crush or chew, as this would destroy the extended-release MMX matrix design that delivers mesalamine throughout the colon.
