What is Levothyroxine?

Levothyroxine is a synthetic thyroid hormone replacement medication used to treat hypothyroidism — a condition where the thyroid gland doesn't produce enough T4 hormone on its own. T4 is the hormone that regulates how your body uses energy, and when levels are low, virtually every system slows down: metabolism, heart rate, digestion, temperature regulation, and cognitive function. Levothyroxine restores T4 to normal levels, allowing those systems to function properly. It's taken once daily on an empty stomach and requires periodic blood tests to dial in the right dose.
