What is Latanoprost (Xalatan)?

Latanoprost is a prostaglandin analog eye drop prescribed to lower intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. Elevated IOP is the primary risk factor for optic nerve damage and progressive vision loss in glaucoma. Latanoprost works by increasing the outflow of aqueous humor—the fluid inside the eye—through the uveoscleral pathway, reducing the pressure that builds when drainage is inadequate. Applied once daily in the evening, it's one of the most commonly prescribed first-line glaucoma treatments due to its efficacy, once-daily dosing, and tolerability.

Uveoscleral outflow enhancement

Activates prostaglandin FP receptors in the ciliary muscle, remodeling the extracellular matrix and increasing the permeability of the uveoscleral drainage pathway to improve aqueous humor outflow and lower IOP.

Once-nightly dosing

Applied once in the evening, Latanoprost provides consistent 24-hour intraocular pressure reduction—evening application has been shown to be more effective than morning use for maintaining stable IOP control overnight.

Optic nerve protection

By consistently lowering IOP, Latanoprost reduces the mechanical pressure on the optic nerve that leads to the progressive, irreversible vision loss characteristic of untreated or undertreated glaucoma.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often do I need to use Xalatan?

Xalatan is applied once daily in the evening — applying it at a consistent time each night provides the most stable 24-hour intraocular pressure reduction. Using it more than once daily does not improve effectiveness.

Will Xalatan change my eye color?

Long-term use can gradually and permanently increase brown pigmentation in the iris of some people — particularly those with hazel, blue, or green eyes. Eyelash changes including growth and darkening can also occur.

Can I use Xalatan with other glaucoma eye drops?

Yes. Xalatan is often used alongside other pressure-lowering drops when single-agent therapy isn't adequate. Wait at least 5–10 minutes between applying different eye drops to prevent washout.

What side effects might I experience?

Eye redness, itching, burning, blurred vision, and stinging are most commonly reported. Iris pigmentation changes and eyelash growth are specific to prostaglandin analogs like latanoprost and develop gradually with long-term use.

How should I store Xalatan?

Unopened Xalatan must be stored in the refrigerator. Once opened, the bottle can be kept at room temperature for up to 6 weeks. Protect from light — store in the original container away from direct sunlight.
