What is Lamictal (lamotrigine)?

Lamictal is an anticonvulsant medication used to treat epilepsy and as a mood stabilizer for bipolar disorder. In epilepsy, it reduces the abnormal electrical activity that causes seizures. In bipolar disorder, it's particularly effective at preventing the depressive episodes that many patients find more debilitating and harder to treat than manic episodes. It works by stabilizing neuronal membranes and reducing the release of excitatory neurotransmitters. Lamictal must be started at a low dose and increased very gradually to minimize the risk of a rare but serious skin reaction.

Sodium channel stabilization

Blocks voltage-gated sodium channels in neurons, preventing the rapid, repetitive firing that underlies both seizure activity and the mood instability associated with bipolar disorder.

Bipolar depression focus

Unlike many mood stabilizers that primarily target mania, Lamictal has strong evidence for preventing the depressive phase of bipolar disorder—making it especially valuable for patients whose illness is predominantly depressive.

Gradual titration requirement

Why does the dose need to be increased so slowly?

How long before Lamictal stabilizes my mood?

For bipolar disorder, meaningful mood stabilization typically develops over 4–8 weeks as the dose is built up. Full preventive benefit — particularly for depressive episodes — may take several months to establish.

What happens if I miss a few doses?

Missing doses can lower blood levels and increase seizure or mood episode risk. If you've been off for several days, your clinician may need to restart the titration schedule rather than resuming your previous dose.

What side effects might I experience?

Dizziness, headache, blurred vision, nausea, and insomnia are most common. The serious rash risk — though rare — is why any new rash should be reported to your clinician immediately during dose escalation.

Is Lamictal safe during pregnancy?

Pregnancy requires careful discussion with your clinician. Lamictal levels change significantly during pregnancy and require more frequent monitoring. The risk of seizures or mood episodes from stopping must be carefully weighed.
