Frequently Asked Questions

What does it mean if my lab results are flagged as 'abnormal'?

A result flagged outside the reference range doesn't automatically mean something is wrong — reference ranges represent the middle 95% of a healthy population, so 1 in 20 healthy people will have a mildly abnormal result by chance. Context matters: your specific values, trends over time, and clinical picture together determine significance.

What lab results typically require prompt follow-up?

Significantly elevated troponin (heart damage marker), potassium or sodium at critical levels, very high or very low glucose, markedly abnormal kidney or liver function, critically low blood counts, abnormal cultures with antibiotic sensitivities, and markedly elevated inflammatory markers in an ill patient are examples requiring timely clinical review.

Why do my cholesterol or blood sugar numbers look different on different tests?

Laboratory results can vary between draws based on fasting status, hydration, recent meals, time of day, stress, and minor analytical variability between labs. Trends over time — not individual results in isolation — provide the most meaningful clinical information. Comparing results from the same fasting state and lab when possible improves reliability.

Should I stop or change my medication based on a lab result I received?

No — do not change medications based on lab results without clinician guidance. Many values — such as slightly elevated LFTs on a statin, mildly elevated TSH, or borderline potassium — require clinical interpretation in context. Your clinician will contact you about truly actionable results and advise on next steps.

What should I do if I receive an abnormal lab result but haven't heard from my clinician?

Contact your clinician's office to confirm they have received and reviewed the result. Most practices have a system to ensure abnormal results are reviewed, but follow-up communication methods vary. At General Medicine, your clinician reviews results with your full health history in context and will reach out when clinical action is needed.
