What is Kevzara?

Kevzara is a biologic medication used to treat moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis in adults whose disease hasn't responded adequately to other treatments. It works by blocking interleukin-6 (IL-6), a protein that plays a central role in driving the joint inflammation, pain, and progressive damage characteristic of RA. Given as a subcutaneous injection every two weeks, Kevzara helps reduce joint swelling and tenderness, slow structural damage, and improve physical function over time. It's typically used when conventional disease-modifying drugs haven't provided enough relief.

Binds to and blocks IL-6 receptors, preventing this key inflammatory cytokine from signaling—directly interrupting the immune cascade responsible for joint inflammation, cartilage damage, and systemic RA symptoms.

How long before Kevzara starts working?

Some people notice improvements in joint symptoms within 2–4 weeks. Meaningful reduction in inflammation, pain, and stiffness typically builds over the first 12 weeks of treatment.

How is Kevzara given?

Kevzara is injected subcutaneously every two weeks using a pre-filled syringe or autoinjector. After proper training, most patients self-inject at home — no clinic visit is required for each dose.

Do I need regular blood monitoring while on Kevzara?

Yes. Regular monitoring of neutrophil counts, platelet counts, and liver enzymes is recommended — particularly in the first few months of treatment. Your clinician will determine the appropriate monitoring schedule.

What side effects might I experience?

Injection site reactions, upper respiratory infections, and urinary tract infections are most common. Because Kevzara suppresses part of the immune response, infections may be more frequent or harder to clear.

Can I take Kevzara with methotrexate?

Yes. Kevzara is often prescribed alongside methotrexate or other conventional DMARDs for greater disease control. Your clinician will determine the right combination based on your disease activity and history.
