What is Keppra?

Keppra (levetiracetam) is a prescription anti-seizure medication used to treat multiple types of epilepsy in adults and children. Its exact mechanism isn't fully understood, but it's believed to work by binding to a synaptic protein (SV2A) that regulates the release of neurotransmitters involved in abnormal electrical activity. Unlike older anti-seizure medications, Keppra has a relatively favorable side effect profile and doesn't require routine blood level monitoring for most patients. It's taken twice daily and works best when used consistently over time.

Synaptic regulation

Keppra binds to the SV2A protein in nerve terminals, modulating neurotransmitter release and reducing the likelihood of abnormal electrical bursts spreading through the brain.

Broad-spectrum coverage

Effective against partial onset, myoclonic, and primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures — making it a versatile option across different epilepsy types.

Consistent background protection

Unlike rescue medications used only during events, Keppra works continuously to lower seizure threshold — effectiveness depends on taking it at the same time each day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I need to take Keppra forever for epilepsy?

Duration depends on your epilepsy type and seizure history. Some people take it long-term; others may eventually taper off under clinician supervision after an extended seizure-free period. Never adjust or stop the dose without guidance.

Can I drink alcohol while taking Keppra?

Alcohol lowers the seizure threshold and should be avoided or limited significantly while taking antiseizure medications. Even moderate alcohol consumption can increase seizure risk and amplify side effects like drowsiness and dizziness.

Does Keppra interact with other medications?

Keppra has fewer drug interactions than many other antiseizure medications — one of its practical advantages. However, some interactions do occur, and your clinician should review all medications including OTC drugs and supplements.

What side effects might I experience?

Drowsiness, dizziness, and fatigue are the most common physical side effects. Behavioral changes — including irritability, aggression, mood changes, and in some cases depression — are important to monitor and report, particularly in children.

Is Keppra safe during pregnancy?

Levetiracetam is sometimes continued during pregnancy when the risk of seizures outweighs the medication risk — uncontrolled seizures during pregnancy are dangerous. This requires individualized discussion and closer monitoring with your clinician.
