What is Jublia (efinaconazole)?

Jublia is a prescription topical antifungal solution used to treat onychomycosis—fungal infections of the toenails. It's applied directly to the affected nail and surrounding skin once daily using a flow-through brush applicator that helps the medication penetrate the nail plate. Efinaconazole works by blocking a key enzyme in the fungal cell membrane synthesis pathway, disrupting the fungus's ability to survive and spread. Treatment requires patience—because nails grow slowly, a full course takes 48 weeks, with clear nail growth becoming visible gradually over time.

Ergosterol synthesis inhibition

Blocks the fungal enzyme CYP51 (lanosterol 14α-demethylase), disrupting ergosterol production—a critical component of the fungal cell membrane—causing membrane instability and fungal cell death.

High nail penetration

Efinaconazole's unique chemical properties allow it to penetrate the nail plate and reach the nail bed where the infection resides more effectively than older topical antifungals, improving clinical outcomes.

48-week topical course

Requires daily application for approximately one year to match the slow growth rate of toenails—consistent application throughout the full course is essential for clearing the infection completely.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does treatment take 48 weeks?

Toenail fungus lives under the nail plate. Jublia needs time to penetrate and clear the infection, and nails grow slowly — a full treatment course aligns with how long it takes for a healthy nail to grow out.

What does successful treatment look like?

Clear nail growing from the base is a positive sign. Don't expect the infected portion to look clear immediately — improvement is gradual as the healthy nail grows in and replaces the previously infected nail.

Do I need liver monitoring with Jublia?

No. Unlike oral antifungal treatments for toenail fungus, Jublia is applied topically and is minimally absorbed — making routine liver monitoring unnecessary, which is a meaningful safety advantage.

What side effects might I experience?

Local reactions at the application site — ingrown toenail, application site dermatitis, vesicles, and pain — are the most commonly reported effects. These are generally mild. Systemic side effects are rare given low absorption.

How do I apply Jublia correctly?

Use the flow-through brush applicator to apply once daily to the entire affected nail — including under the tip and the surrounding skin. Allow it to dry before putting on socks or shoes.
