Frequently Asked Questions

What causes jaw clenching and teeth grinding (bruxism)?

Bruxism is most commonly associated with stress and anxiety, sleep disorders (particularly sleep apnea), certain medications (SSRIs, stimulants), caffeine, and alcohol. It occurs both during sleep (sleep bruxism) and while awake. Many people are unaware they clench until they develop jaw pain, tooth wear, or headaches.

Can jaw clenching cause long-term damage?

Yes — chronic bruxism causes progressive tooth wear, cracked teeth, jaw muscle hypertrophy, TMJ dysfunction, and receding gums. Identifying and managing it early prevents cumulative dental and joint damage that becomes increasingly costly and complex to address.

Will a night guard protect my teeth?

An occlusal splint (night guard) protects teeth from wear and reduces forces transmitted to the TMJ and jaw muscles during sleep. It doesn't stop the clenching behavior itself but prevents the structural damage it causes. A custom-fitted guard from a dentist provides better protection and comfort than OTC versions.

Can botulinum toxin injections help with jaw clenching?

Yes — botulinum toxin injected into the masseter muscles reduces their force and can significantly decrease bruxism-related pain and jaw muscle bulk. Effects last approximately 4–6 months. It's an effective option for patients with significant jaw pain, headache, or cosmetic concerns from masseter hypertrophy.

What side effects are associated with jaw clenching treatments?

Night guards are very safe — occasional bite changes occur with prolonged hard acrylic splint use. Botulinum toxin may cause temporary difficulty with chewing tough foods and mild facial asymmetry. Muscle relaxants for short-term relief cause drowsiness. Treating underlying sleep apnea or anxiety addresses a root cause.
