What is Jardiance?

Jardiance is a prescription medication used to improve blood sugar control in adults with Type 2 diabetes, and to reduce the risk of cardiovascular death in adults with Type 2 diabetes and established heart disease. It also reduces the risk of hospitalization for heart failure and slows the progression of chronic kidney disease. Jardiance works by blocking SGLT2 receptors in the kidneys, causing excess glucose to be excreted in the urine rather than reabsorbed into the bloodstream. It's taken once daily in the morning and often produces modest weight loss as a secondary benefit.

SGLT2 inhibition

Blocks sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 in the kidney tubules, preventing glucose reabsorption and causing the kidneys to excrete excess sugar directly into the urine—lowering blood glucose without stimulating insulin release.

Cardiovascular and kidney protection

Beyond glucose control, Jardiance has demonstrated significant reductions in cardiovascular death, heart failure hospitalization, and kidney disease progression—benefits that extend well beyond its blood sugar-lowering effects.
