What is Jantoven?

Jantoven is an oral anticoagulant—a blood thinner—used to prevent and treat blood clots in conditions including atrial fibrillation, deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, and after heart valve replacement. It works by blocking the vitamin K-dependent clotting factors the liver produces, reducing the blood's ability to form dangerous clots. Because Jantoven's effect varies widely between individuals based on diet, genetics, and other medications, it requires regular INR blood tests to ensure the dose is in the therapeutic range—effective without being dangerously high.

Vitamin K antagonism

Inhibits the enzyme that recycles vitamin K, preventing the liver from producing functional clotting factors II, VII, IX, and X—reducing the blood's clotting ability in a measurable, adjustable way.

Adjustable anticoagulation

Unlike newer anticoagulants with fixed dosing, Jantoven's dose can be precisely titrated based on INR test results—allowing for fine-tuned anticoagulation in patients with complex needs or those requiring very specific therapeutic targets.
