What is Irbesartan?

Irbesartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) used to treat high blood pressure and to protect the kidneys in people with Type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure. It works by blocking the AT1 receptor that angiotensin II binds to—a potent vasoconstrictor—allowing blood vessels to relax and blood pressure to fall. Like other ARBs, it provides kidney protection by reducing intraglomerular pressure and the protein leakage (microalbuminuria) that signals early diabetic nephropathy. It's taken once daily and is well-tolerated, particularly for patients who develop a dry cough on ACE inhibitors.

Angiotensin II receptor blockade

Selectively blocks AT1 receptors, preventing angiotensin II from causing vasoconstriction, sodium retention, and aldosterone release—lowering blood pressure through direct vessel relaxation without affecting the bradykinin pathway.

Diabetic kidney protection

Reduces intraglomerular hypertension and the protein leakage that marks early kidney damage in diabetic nephropathy—with clinical trial evidence supporting its ability to slow progression to more severe kidney disease in Type 2 diabetes patients.

ACE inhibitor alternative

Provides the same cardiovascular and renal protection as ACE inhibitors without triggering the bradykinin-mediated dry cough that leads many patients to discontinue ACE inhibitor therapy.
