Frequently Asked Questions

What is intertrigo and what causes it?

Intertrigo is inflammation of skin folds — under the breasts, in the groin, armpits, abdominal folds, and between the toes — caused by friction, moisture, and heat. It presents as red, raw, sometimes macerated skin that may be itchy or painful. Secondary infection with Candida or bacteria is very common.

How do I know if my intertrigo is infected with yeast or bacteria?

Candida-infected intertrigo typically has a beefy red rash with satellite pustules extending beyond the main rash edge. Bacterial (most commonly Staphylococcus or Corynebacterium) infection produces crusting, foul odor, and sometimes purulent discharge. Clinicians distinguish these on exam — treatment differs significantly.

What can I do at home to manage intertrigo?

Keep skin folds clean and dry — pat thoroughly after bathing, apply moisture-wicking fabrics, use absorbent powder (cornstarch or antifungal powder), and allow air exposure when possible. Weight loss in those with overweight reduces friction and fold depth significantly. These measures complement medical treatment.

Will intertrigo keep recurring?

Recurrence is common when underlying risk factors — obesity, hyperhidrosis, diabetes, immobility — persist. Addressing these alongside antifungal or antibacterial treatment significantly reduces recurrence. Some patients benefit from barrier creams or preventive antifungal powder applied regularly to problem areas.

What side effects are associated with intertrigo treatments?

Topical antifungals are very well tolerated. Combination steroid-antifungal creams reduce inflammation but should not be used long-term due to skin thinning in already-fragile fold skin. Topical antibiotics may cause contact sensitization with prolonged use. Absorbent powders and barrier creams are very safe for ongoing preventive use.
