Insect bite
Most insect bites are mild and resolve on their own, but increasing redness, swelling, or spreading rash can mean it's become infected or you're having a bigger reaction. This visit gets you a clinician's assessment and relief.

Frequently asked questions
When does an insect bite need a clinician's attention?
Increasing redness, warmth, swelling that spreads beyond the bite, or a fever suggest a developing infection rather than a normal reaction, and are worth having evaluated promptly. Your clinician can help determine whether what you're seeing is a normal reaction or something more.
When is a bite a medical emergency?
Difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, or dizziness after a bite or sting are signs of a severe allergic reaction and need emergency care immediately. Use an epinephrine auto-injector immediately if you have one and call 911 right away.
What if I was bitten by a tick?
Your clinician can help assess your risk and discuss whether preventive treatment or monitoring makes sense based on the type of tick and how long it was attached. Removing the tick properly and noting the date can help your clinician assess your risk accurately.
What helps with itching and swelling at home?
Cool compresses, over-the-counter antihistamines, and hydrocortisone cream can help mild reactions while you're being seen, though spreading redness or worsening symptoms warrant a closer look. Elevating the affected area can also help reduce swelling if it's on a limb. Taking an oral antihistamine before symptoms peak can also help reduce discomfort.
What side effects are associated with insect bite treatments?
Topical treatments can cause mild irritation at the application site; oral antihistamines commonly cause drowsiness, so avoid driving until you know how they affect you. Your clinician will discuss which option fits your specific reaction and its severity.
