Frequently Asked Questions

What causes ingrown toenails?

Ingrown toenails develop when the nail edge curves into the surrounding skin — most commonly from cutting nails too short or with curved edges, wearing tight footwear, nail trauma, or naturally curved nail shape. The big toe is most commonly affected. They cause pain, swelling, and redness at the nail border.

Can I treat an ingrown toenail at home?

Mild ingrown toenails without infection can be managed at home — soaking the foot in warm water for 15–20 minutes 3–4 times daily, gently lifting the nail edge and placing a small piece of cotton or dental floss underneath to encourage correct growth, and wearing open-toed footwear. Once infection is present, clinical evaluation is needed.

When does an ingrown toenail need clinical treatment?

Seek evaluation when significant infection is present — increasing pain, purulent discharge, spreading redness, or fever — and when home measures haven't improved the situation within a few days. Patients with diabetes, peripheral vascular disease, or neuropathy should seek evaluation early rather than managing at home.

What does professional treatment for an ingrown toenail involve?

Partial nail avulsion — removing the ingrown nail edge under local anesthesia — provides immediate relief and is the standard in-office treatment. Chemical matrixectomy (phenol application to prevent regrowth of the offending nail edge) is added to reduce recurrence for recurrent or severe cases.

What side effects are associated with ingrown toenail treatments?

Nail avulsion under local anesthesia causes temporary soreness during healing — typically 1–2 weeks. Chemical matrixectomy may cause delayed healing and occasional drainage. Antibiotics for secondary infection carry standard GI side effect considerations. Proper nail cutting technique after treatment is the most important recurrence prevention measure.
