Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I have the flu or a cold?

Influenza typically causes abrupt onset of high fever, significant body aches, headache, fatigue, and dry cough — the systemic symptoms are much more prominent than in a typical cold. Cold symptoms are gradual, milder, and predominantly upper respiratory (runny nose, sneezing). Rapid flu tests can confirm influenza when the distinction matters clinically.

Do I need antiviral medication for the flu?

Antivirals — oseltamivir (Tamiflu), baloxavir (Xofluza) — are most effective when started within 48 hours of symptom onset and are recommended for high-risk individuals (elderly, immunocompromised, pregnant, severe illness) or those with complications. They shorten illness duration by approximately 1 day and reduce complication risk.

How long am I contagious with influenza?

Adults with flu are typically contagious from 1 day before symptom onset to 5–7 days after becoming ill. Immunocompromised individuals may shed virus for longer periods. The CDC recommends staying home until fever-free for at least 24 hours without fever-reducing medication.

Should I get the flu vaccine even if I got sick this year?

Yes — annual vaccination is recommended regardless of prior illness, as vaccine strains are updated each year and immunity from natural infection wanes. The vaccine also protects against influenza strains you haven't been exposed to this season. Getting vaccinated while recovered from flu is safe.

What side effects are associated with influenza treatments?

Oseltamivir commonly causes nausea and vomiting — taking with food reduces this. Baloxavir is generally well tolerated. OTC symptom management (NSAIDs, acetaminophen, decongestants) carries standard side effect profiles. Aspirin should be avoided in children with influenza due to Reye's syndrome risk.
