Your tattoo site is increasingly red, swollen, or painful beyond the first 48 hours

You're seeing yellow or green discharge rather than normal healing fluid

Redness or warmth is spreading beyond the edge of the tattoo

You have a fever alongside symptoms at the tattoo site

You want to know whether topical or oral antibiotics are needed

The infection appeared weeks after tattooing and you're not sure what's causing it

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my tattoo is infected or just healing normally?

Normal healing involves redness, swelling, and tenderness in the first few days, followed by peeling and itching as skin heals. Infection signs include worsening or spreading redness beyond the tattoo border, increasing pain after the first few days, warmth, swelling, purulent (green or yellow) discharge, red streaks, or fever.

Can I treat a mild tattoo infection at home?

Very mild superficial irritation may respond to gentle cleaning with mild soap and water and keeping the area clean and uncovered. Signs of true infection — spreading redness, purulent discharge, fever, or red streaks — require clinical evaluation and typically oral antibiotics. Delaying care risks worsening infection.

What bacteria commonly cause tattoo infections?

Staphylococcus aureus — including MRSA — is the most common cause. Non-tuberculous mycobacteria can cause delayed, persistent infections from contaminated tattoo ink — presenting weeks to months after tattooing as red papules or nodules that don't respond to standard antibiotics.

Will an infection ruin my tattoo?

Mild infections treated promptly typically heal without significant impact on the tattoo's appearance. Severe infections or those requiring incision and drainage may cause scarring that distorts the design. This is one reason early clinical evaluation of concerning signs is important.

What side effects are associated with infected tattoo treatments?

Oral antibiotics (dicloxacillin, cephalexin, or TMP-SMX for MRSA) may cause GI upset. Topical antibiotics carry minimal systemic effects. Incision and drainage for abscess causes temporary soreness. Prolonged courses for atypical mycobacterial infections require monitoring for medication-specific side effects. Infected Tattoo visit What to expect from a Infected Tattoo visit
