What is Hydroxyzine?

Hydroxyzine is an antihistamine used to treat anxiety, itching from allergic skin reactions, and, at times, as a short-term sleep aid. Unlike some other anti-anxiety medications, it isn't considered habit-forming. It works partly by blocking histamine and calming activity in the brain associated with anxiety and itching. It's typically taken as needed or on a set schedule, depending on what it's being used for.

Antihistamine and calming effect

Blocks histamine receptors in the brain, producing both allergy relief and a calming, anti-anxiety effect at higher doses.

Non-habit-forming

Doesn't carry the dependence risk associated with benzodiazepines, making it an option for situational anxiety.

Fast onset

Starts working within about an hour, making it useful for as-needed situational anxiety rather than daily maintenance.
