What is Humira (Adalimumab)?

Humira is a biologic medication that treats a wide range of inflammatory conditions by targeting and neutralizing TNF-alpha—a protein that plays a central role in driving chronic inflammation. It's approved for rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, plaque psoriasis, and several other immune-mediated conditions. Given as a subcutaneous injection every one to two weeks, Humira works at the immune system level to reduce the underlying inflammation that causes tissue damage and symptoms—rather than simply managing pain or discomfort on the surface.

TNF-alpha neutralization

Binds to and blocks tumor necrosis factor-alpha, a central inflammatory cytokine that orchestrates the chronic immune activation driving joint destruction, intestinal inflammation, and skin plaques in multiple conditions.

Disease modification

Goes beyond symptom management to interrupt the inflammatory cycle that causes progressive structural damage in conditions like rheumatoid arthritis and Crohn's disease—slowing disease progression and preserving long-term function.

Broad multi-condition approval

One of the most extensively studied biologics available, Humira is approved across more than ten distinct inflammatory conditions—making it a cornerstone biologic therapy with decades of real-world safety and efficacy data.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long before Humira starts working?

For rheumatoid arthritis, many people notice improvement in joint pain and swelling within 2–4 weeks. For Crohn's disease or psoriasis, it may take 4–12 weeks to see meaningful response at full therapeutic doses.

Do I need vaccines before starting Humira?

Yes. Because Humira suppresses part of the immune system, live vaccines cannot be given while on it. Your clinician will review your vaccination history and recommend any needed updates before starting treatment.

What infections should I watch for while on Humira?

Humira increases susceptibility to serious infections including tuberculosis, fungal infections, and bacterial infections. Report any signs of fever, persistent cough, weight loss, or unusual fatigue to your clinician promptly.

What side effects might I experience?

Injection site reactions — redness, swelling, and pain — are most common. Increased infection risk, upper respiratory infections, and headache are also frequently reported. Serious side effects include risk of reactivating TB.

Are biosimilars like Hadlima or Hyrimoz the same as Humira?

FDA-approved adalimumab biosimilars are confirmed to have no clinically meaningful differences from Humira in safety or effectiveness. Switching to a biosimilar is generally appropriate when recommended by your clinician or insurance plan.
