What is Humatin (Paromomycin)?

Humatin is an oral aminoglycoside antibiotic used to treat intestinal parasitic infections—primarily intestinal amebiasis caused by Entamoeba histolytica and tapeworm infections. Unlike most aminoglycosides that require injection and are used for serious systemic infections, Paromomycin is poorly absorbed from the GI tract and works locally within the intestine—making it effective for luminal parasites while avoiding systemic toxicity. It works by binding to bacterial and protozoal ribosomes and blocking protein synthesis. It's taken with meals for a short course of 5–10 days depending on the infection being treated.

Ribosomal protein synthesis inhibition

Binds to the 30S ribosomal subunit of intestinal parasites and bacteria, causing misreading of mRNA and inhibiting protein synthesis—effective against the luminal phase of E. histolytica and intestinal tapeworm species.

Gut-localized aminoglycoside

Paromomycin is minimally absorbed from the GI tract—concentrating its antiparasitic activity entirely within the intestinal lumen where the target organisms reside, without the renal and auditory toxicity associated with systemically absorbed aminoglycosides.

Luminal amebiasis targeting

Specifically addresses the intestinal (luminal) phase of amebic infection, making it an important component of complete amebiasis treatment—often used following or alongside a systemic agent like metronidazole to eliminate any remaining intestinal cysts.

Frequently Asked Questions

What infections does Humatin treat?

Humatin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic used to treat intestinal parasitic infections — primarily intestinal amebiasis caused by Entamoeba histolytica and tapeworm infections. It works locally within the intestinal tract.

Why is Humatin used for intestinal infections specifically?

Paromomycin is minimally absorbed from the GI tract — it concentrates its antiparasitic activity within the intestinal lumen where the parasites reside, without the systemic toxicity concerns of absorbed aminoglycosides.

Does Humatin treat both the intestinal and tissue phases of amebiasis?

No. Humatin addresses only the intestinal (luminal) phase of E. histolytica infection. For invasive or tissue-phase amebiasis — including liver abscess — a systemic antiparasitic like metronidazole is also required.

What side effects might I experience?

Nausea, stomach cramps, diarrhea, and abdominal discomfort are the most commonly reported effects — most often mild given that minimal drug enters the bloodstream. These typically resolve when treatment is completed.

How long is a typical course of Humatin?

For intestinal amebiasis, the course is typically 7 days of three-times-daily dosing. For tapeworm infections, a single-day course may be used. Your clinician will specify the regimen appropriate for your infection type.
