What is a Hep B Immunity Panel?

The Hep B Immunity Panel tests for two hepatitis B antibodies that together determine your immune status — whether you're protected from infection, and whether that protection came from vaccination or prior infection. This distinction is important for healthcare workers, people planning immunosuppressive therapy, and anyone who needs documented proof of immunity.

Hepatitis B surface antibody (anti-HBs) — protection status

Measures the antibody that indicates protective immunity. A level of 10 mIU/mL or above is considered protective — confirming either successful vaccination response or immunity from resolved past infection.

Hepatitis B core antibody (anti-HBc) — infection history

The core antibody is produced only in response to actual HBV infection — not vaccination. A positive anti-HBc alongside positive anti-HBs indicates immunity from prior infection rather than vaccination alone, which has implications for immunosuppressive therapy decisions.

Vaccination verification and booster guidance

Together the two markers identify who is protected, who has waning immunity from prior vaccination, and who may need a booster dose — critical information for healthcare workers and others requiring verified immune status.

Hepatitis B Surface Antibody (anti-HBs)

Shows if you have developed immunity from vaccination or past infection. A positive result generally indicates protection from Hepatitis B.

Hepatitis B Core Antibody (anti-HBc)

Indicates past or current infection; helps distinguish between vaccination-only immunity and immunity due to previous infection.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Hep B Immunity Panel test for?

The panel measures hepatitis B surface antibody (anti-HBs) to determine whether you have protective immunity — either from prior vaccination or past infection. Some panels also include surface antigen and core antibody to distinguish between immunity from vaccination versus prior infection.

Why would I need to check my hepatitis B immunity?

Healthcare workers, people in high-risk occupations, those considering immunosuppressive therapy, and individuals uncertain of their vaccination history commonly need immunity verification. Immunity from vaccination can wane over time — particularly if the vaccine series was completed in childhood.

What antibody level indicates I'm protected?

An anti-HBs level of 10 mIU/mL or above is considered protective. Levels below this threshold indicate inadequate immunity and may warrant a booster dose or repeat vaccination.

Do I need to fast for this test?

No fasting is required. Hepatitis B antibody levels are not affected by recent food intake.

I completed my hepatitis B vaccine series — do I still need to check?

In most clinical settings, post-vaccination immunity testing is reserved for high-risk individuals (healthcare workers, sexual partners of infected people, immunocompromised). For the general population, the completed series is considered sufficient. Your clinician can advise based on your situation.
