Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I have hemorrhoids or something more serious?

Hemorrhoids typically cause painless rectal bleeding on toilet paper or in the bowl, anal itching, or discomfort. However, rectal bleeding should not be assumed to be hemorrhoids without evaluation — particularly in adults over 40 or those with changes in bowel habits.

What is the difference between internal and external hemorrhoids?

Internal hemorrhoids develop inside the rectum and are usually painless — they may bleed or prolapse (protrude). External hemorrhoids form under the skin around the anus and can cause pain, swelling, and itching, particularly if a blood clot forms (thrombosed hemorrhoid).

Will hemorrhoids go away without treatment?

Mild hemorrhoids often improve with dietary changes — increased fiber, adequate hydration — and sitz baths within days to weeks. Persistent, prolapsing, or thrombosed hemorrhoids typically require medical or procedural treatment to resolve.

When do hemorrhoids require a procedure?

Office procedures like rubber band ligation are appropriate for internal hemorrhoids that prolapse or bleed persistently despite conservative care. Surgical hemorrhoidectomy is reserved for large, symptomatic hemorrhoids that don't respond to office-based procedures.

What side effects are associated with hemorrhoid treatments?

Topical agents — hydrocortisone, witch hazel, lidocaine — are generally well tolerated with minimal side effects. Rubber band ligation may cause temporary pain and pressure. Surgical procedures carry standard post-operative recovery and a small risk of complications including bleeding and infection. Hemorrhoid visit What to expect from a Hemorrhoid visit
