Frequently Asked Questions

What is Hashimoto's disease and how does it affect the thyroid?

Hashimoto's is an autoimmune condition in which the immune system attacks thyroid tissue, progressively impairing its ability to produce thyroid hormone. Over time, most people develop hypothyroidism requiring thyroid hormone replacement therapy.

Do I need treatment if my thyroid levels are still normal?

Not necessarily. Many people with Hashimoto's maintain normal thyroid function for years and don't require medication. Monitoring TSH and free T4 periodically — typically every 6–12 months — allows for timely treatment when levels shift into the hypothyroid range.

Will my symptoms improve with levothyroxine?

Most hypothyroid symptoms — fatigue, weight gain, brain fog, cold intolerance — improve significantly with properly dosed levothyroxine. Some people continue to experience symptoms despite normal TSH levels and may benefit from adjusted dosing or combination T4/T3 therapy.

Can diet or lifestyle changes help with Hashimoto's?

There is no diet proven to reverse Hashimoto's, but some patients report improvement by avoiding gluten or addressing selenium deficiency. Managing stress and maintaining adequate sleep also support immune regulation. These complement but do not replace medication when needed.

What side effects are associated with Hashimoto's treatments?

Levothyroxine is well tolerated at appropriate doses — side effects mainly occur with excessive dosing, including palpitations, weight loss, anxiety, and bone density loss over time. Dose titration with periodic TSH monitoring keeps treatment in the optimal range. Hashimoto's Disease visit What to expect from a Hashimoto's Disease visit
