What is Geodon?

Geodon is an atypical antipsychotic used to treat schizophrenia and the manic and mixed episodes of bipolar disorder. It works by blocking dopamine D2 receptors to reduce psychotic symptoms and serotonin 5-HT2A receptors to improve mood and reduce certain side effects associated with dopamine blockade. One of Geodon's distinguishing features is its relatively weight-neutral profile compared to many other atypical antipsychotics—it's less likely to cause significant metabolic side effects like weight gain and elevated blood sugar. It must be taken with food to ensure adequate absorption, and it can prolong the QT interval, requiring cardiac monitoring in some patients.

Dopamine and serotonin receptor blockade

Blocks D2 dopamine receptors to reduce hallucinations and delusions, and 5-HT2A serotonin receptors to improve mood stability and reduce the extrapyramidal side effects associated with pure dopamine blockade.

Weight-neutral metabolic profile

Compared to olanzapine, quetiapine, and clozapine, Geodon has significantly less propensity to cause weight gain, elevated blood glucose, and lipid abnormalities—making it a preferred option for patients where metabolic side effects are a primary concern.

Food-dependent absorption

Must be taken with a meal of at least 500 calories to achieve adequate and consistent blood levels—poor absorption on an empty stomach can lead to subtherapeutic drug levels and reduced clinical efficacy.
