Frequently Asked Questions

What causes genital warts?

Genital warts are caused by certain low-risk strains of human papillomavirus (HPV) — primarily HPV 6 and 11. HPV is the most common sexually transmitted infection. Most sexually active people are exposed at some point; most infections clear on their own without causing visible warts.

Do genital warts cause cancer?

The HPV strains causing genital warts (6 and 11) are not the strains associated with cervical, anal, or other HPV-related cancers (16 and 18). However, a person can have multiple HPV strains simultaneously — regular cervical cancer screening remains important regardless of genital wart history.

Will my genital warts go away without treatment?

Some warts resolve on their own — but this can take months to years. Treatment accelerates clearance, reduces transmission risk, and addresses cosmetic and symptomatic concerns. No treatment eliminates HPV from the body — recurrence is possible even after successful clearance of visible warts.

Can I prevent spreading HPV to my partner?

Condoms reduce — but don't eliminate — HPV transmission. HPV vaccination (Gardasil 9) is highly effective at preventing infection with the strains causing most genital warts and cervical cancers, and is recommended through age 26 for all genders — and considered for some adults up to age 45.

What side effects are associated with genital wart treatments?

Topical treatments (imiquimod, podophyllotoxin, sinecatechins) commonly cause local irritation, redness, and burning — expected as part of the treatment response. Cryotherapy and other procedural approaches cause temporary pain and blistering at the treatment site. Genital Warts visit What to expect from a Genital Warts visit
