Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between viral gastroenteritis and food poisoning?

Viral gastroenteritis typically has a 1–3 day incubation period and causes nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and cramping — spreading person-to-person. Food poisoning from bacterial toxins often begins within hours of eating a specific meal, frequently causing more sudden and intense vomiting. Both are usually self-limiting.

How do I stay hydrated when I can't keep fluids down?

Sipping small amounts of oral rehydration solution every few minutes is more effective than drinking large volumes at once, which triggers vomiting. Ice chips help when liquids aren't tolerated. Sports drinks are a reasonable substitute but contain less ideal electrolyte ratios. Seek evaluation if unable to keep any fluids down for more than 24 hours.

Do I need to go to the emergency room for gastroenteritis?

Most cases are managed at home. Seek prompt evaluation for signs of significant dehydration (no urination for 8+ hours, dizziness, dry mouth, sunken eyes), high fever, blood in stool or vomit, severe abdominal pain, symptoms lasting beyond 5–7 days, or illness in an infant, young child, or immunocompromised person.

Should I take anti-diarrheal medication?

Loperamide can reduce stool frequency and is appropriate for non-bloody, non-febrile diarrhea in adults — helping manage symptoms while the illness resolves. It should not be used when bacterial infection with systemic features is suspected, as slowing gut motility can worsen some infections.

What side effects are associated with gastroenteritis treatments?

Oral rehydration solutions are very safe. Loperamide may cause constipation and bloating if overused. Antiemetics (ondansetron) are well tolerated — headache is the most common side effect. Antibiotics, when prescribed for specific bacterial causes, carry GI side effect and resistance considerations. Gastroenteritis visit What to expect from a Gastroenteritis visit
