What is Furosemide (Lasix)?

Furosemide is a powerful loop diuretic—commonly called a water pill—used to treat fluid retention (edema) caused by heart failure, liver disease, or kidney disease, as well as high blood pressure. It works by blocking sodium and chloride reabsorption in the kidneys, causing the body to excrete significantly more water and salt through urine. This rapid fluid removal reduces swelling, lowers blood pressure, and eases the strain on the heart and lungs. It works quickly—usually within an hour of taking it—and its effects last 6–8 hours.

Loop diuretic mechanism

Blocks the sodium-potassium-chloride transporter in the loop of Henle in the kidney, preventing the reabsorption of sodium and water and dramatically increasing urine output.

Rapid edema relief

Works within 30–60 minutes of dosing to mobilize excess fluid from tissues and the circulatory system—providing fast relief from swollen legs, ankles, and the pulmonary congestion associated with heart failure.

Blood pressure reduction

By reducing overall fluid volume in the circulatory system, Furosemide lowers blood pressure and reduces the workload on the heart—particularly valuable when fluid overload is a contributing factor.

Frequently Asked Questions

How quickly does Lasix work?

Furosemide begins working within 30–60 minutes of an oral dose, with peak effect at 1–2 hours. IV furosemide works even faster — within minutes. Effects typically last 6–8 hours.

Why do I need to monitor my potassium while on Lasix?

Furosemide increases urinary potassium excretion alongside sodium and water. Low potassium (hypokalemia) can cause muscle weakness, cramps, and heart rhythm changes — making regular monitoring and dietary attention important.

Should I limit my fluid intake while taking Lasix?

Not necessarily. Your clinician will advise based on your condition. For heart failure, fluid restriction is often recommended alongside Lasix. Staying adequately hydrated is still important to avoid dehydration.

What side effects might I experience?

Increased urination, dizziness, low blood pressure, muscle cramps, and electrolyte imbalances are most common. Dehydration can occur if fluid losses aren't replaced. Tinnitus has been reported at high doses.

Can I take Lasix with blood pressure medications?

Yes, it's often combined with other antihypertensives for greater blood pressure control. However, combining it with certain medications requires monitoring — your clinician will review your full list for potential interactions.
