Frequently Asked Questions

Why was I told I need follow-up imaging?

Follow-up imaging is ordered when an initial scan identifies a finding that needs monitoring over time — to assess whether it's stable, growing, or changing — rather than acting on it immediately. Common examples include pulmonary nodules, ovarian cysts, thyroid nodules, adrenal incidentalomas, and liver lesions.

Does needing follow-up imaging mean something is wrong?

Not necessarily. Many findings that prompt follow-up imaging are ultimately benign. The purpose is to establish stability over time — most monitored findings never require intervention. Your clinician will explain the specific finding, what is being watched for, and what would change the management plan.

How long do I need to continue follow-up imaging?

Follow-up duration depends on the finding type, its size, and characteristics. For pulmonary nodules, guidelines specify intervals based on size and risk profile — typically 3–24 months. For many findings, demonstrating stability over 2 years is sufficient to discontinue surveillance.

What happens if my follow-up imaging shows the finding has changed?

Change in a monitored finding — growth, increased complexity, or new features — triggers a more active evaluation pathway. This might include additional imaging, referral to a specialist, or biopsy. Most findings remain stable — change that prompts escalation is less common but important to catch.

Are there risks associated with follow-up imaging?

CT scans involve low-level radiation — the clinical benefit of monitoring a finding typically far outweighs this risk. MRI and ultrasound involve no radiation. The main non-physical risk is anxiety related to surveillance. Your clinician can put the finding in perspective and help contextualize what is being monitored.
