Reasons to book your folliculitis visit

Recurring bumps around hair follicles usually have an identifiable trigger — and a targeted fix. This visit identifies the type and cause so treatment actually works.

You have small, itchy, or tender red bumps clustered around hair follicles

The bumps are on your thighs, buttocks, armpits, or face

Symptoms started after shaving, waxing, or using a hot tub

OTC treatments and improved hygiene haven't cleared the bumps

You're not sure if what you have is folliculitis, acne, or an ingrown hair issue

Bumps keep coming back and you want a prescription-strength solution

Frequently Asked Questions

What is folliculitis and what causes it?

Folliculitis is inflammation of hair follicles — presenting as small red bumps or pustules around follicles, often itchy or tender. Causes include bacterial infection (most commonly Staphylococcus aureus), fungal infection (Malassezia), pseudomonas ('hot tub folliculitis'), razor friction, occlusive clothing, and shaving.

Is folliculitis contagious?

Bacterial folliculitis caused by Staphylococcus aureus can be spread through shared towels, razors, or skin contact. It's mildly contagious — good hygiene and avoiding sharing personal care items reduces transmission risk. Fungal and non-infectious folliculitis are not contagious.

Will folliculitis go away on its own?

Mild folliculitis often resolves within days with basic hygiene — gentle cleansing, avoiding the triggering factor (tight clothing, shaving), and allowing the area to breathe. Persistent, spreading, or painful folliculitis typically requires topical or oral antibiotic or antifungal treatment.

How can I prevent folliculitis from recurring?

Use a clean, sharp razor and shave in the direction of hair growth. Avoid occlusive clothing in areas prone to folliculitis. Shower promptly after sweating. Change out of wet swimwear quickly. Avoid sharing razors or towels. For recurrent staph folliculitis, decolonization with mupirocin nasal ointment and chlorhexidine washes may be recommended.

What side effects are associated with folliculitis treatments?

Topical antibiotics and antifungals are well tolerated — mild irritation is the most common effect. Oral antibiotics carry GI side effect risks. Benzoyl peroxide washes are effective for mild bacterial folliculitis but may bleach fabric and cause skin dryness. Antifungal shampoos used as body washes are very safe.
