What is Advair (Fluticasone/Salmeterol)?

Advair is a combination inhaler containing fluticasone, an inhaled corticosteroid, and salmeterol, a long-acting beta-2 agonist bronchodilator. Together, they provide both anti-inflammatory control and sustained airway opening for people with asthma or COPD. Fluticasone reduces chronic airway inflammation that makes the lungs hypersensitive, while salmeterol relaxes the muscles surrounding the airways to keep them open for up to 12 hours. It's used as a maintenance medication taken twice daily—not a rescue inhaler—and works best when used consistently as part of a long-term management plan.

Dual maintenance mechanism

Fluticasone reduces the chronic airway inflammation that underlies asthma and COPD, while salmeterol provides sustained 12-hour bronchodilation—together addressing both the inflammatory root cause and the resulting airway constriction.

Long-acting bronchodilation

Salmeterol's extended duration means a single morning and evening dose provides continuous airway muscle relaxation throughout the day and night, reducing symptoms and improving exercise tolerance.

Reduced exacerbation frequency

Consistent use of the combined steroid and long-acting bronchodilator significantly lowers the frequency of asthma and COPD flare-ups and reduces dependence on short-acting rescue inhalers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use Advair as a rescue inhaler during an attack?

No. Advair is a maintenance inhaler — used daily to prevent symptoms, not to treat acute attacks. A separate short-acting rescue inhaler like albuterol should always be kept on hand for sudden symptoms.

How long before Advair improves my asthma or COPD?

Salmeterol's bronchodilating effect works within minutes, but the full anti-inflammatory benefit of fluticasone builds over days to weeks of consistent twice-daily use. Daily use — even on good days — is essential.

Do I need to rinse my mouth after using Advair?

Yes. Rinsing with water and spitting after each use reduces the risk of oral thrush — a fungal infection that can develop when inhaled steroid deposits in the mouth and throat.

What side effects might I experience?

Oral thrush, hoarseness, throat irritation, and headache are most common. Rinsing after use significantly reduces thrush risk. Long-acting beta-agonists like salmeterol should not be used without an ICS — Advair provides both together.

Is there a generic version of Advair?

Yes — fluticasone/salmeterol inhalers are available as generics and may be significantly less expensive. Ask your clinician or pharmacist whether a generic formulation is appropriate for your device and technique.
