What is Fluoxetine (Prozac)?

Fluoxetine is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) and one of the most widely recognized antidepressants in the world. It's approved for major depressive disorder, OCD, bulimia nervosa, panic disorder, bipolar depression (in combination), and premenstrual dysphoric disorder. Fluoxetine has the longest half-life of any SSRI—5–6 days—which makes it the most forgiving if a dose is missed and allows for easier discontinuation without the withdrawal symptoms that can accompany shorter-acting SSRIs. It's taken once daily, often in the morning due to its mildly activating nature.

Serotonin reuptake inhibition

Blocks the serotonin transporter, increasing serotonin availability in the synaptic space to regulate mood, reduce anxiety, and improve emotional stability across depression, OCD, and related conditions.

Longest SSRI half-life

With a half-life of 5–6 days (and an active metabolite lasting even longer), Fluoxetine is uniquely forgiving of missed doses and produces minimal discontinuation symptoms—an important practical advantage for patients who struggle with consistent adherence.

Multi-condition approval

One of the few SSRIs approved for bulimia nervosa, with evidence for reducing binge-purge episodes alongside its established efficacy for depression, OCD, panic disorder, and PMDD—offering broad coverage across comorbid psychiatric presentations.

Frequently Asked Questions

What conditions is Prozac approved for?

Prozac is FDA-approved for major depression, OCD, bulimia nervosa, panic disorder, bipolar depression (in combination with olanzapine), and PMDD — one of the broadest indication lists among SSRIs.

How is Prozac different from other SSRIs?

Prozac has the longest half-life of any SSRI — 5–6 days, with an active metabolite lasting even longer. This makes it the most forgiving of missed doses and the easiest to discontinue without significant withdrawal symptoms.

How long before Prozac starts working?

Most people begin noticing mood improvements within 2–4 weeks. Full antidepressant benefit typically takes 4–6 weeks. Because of its long half-life, it continues working for days even if a dose is missed.

What side effects might I experience?

Nausea, insomnia, headache, dry mouth, and sexual side effects are most common. Prozac's activating properties — more energizing than sedating — can worsen insomnia in some patients, which is why morning dosing is often recommended.

Is Prozac safe during pregnancy?

Prozac is one of the more studied SSRIs in pregnancy. The decision to continue, switch, or stop requires careful risk-benefit discussion — untreated depression during pregnancy also carries risks that must be weighed.
