What is Fluconazole (Diflucan)?

Fluconazole is an oral antifungal medication used to treat a wide range of fungal infections including vaginal yeast infections, oral thrush, esophageal candidiasis, and systemic fungal infections. It works by blocking an enzyme essential to the synthesis of ergosterol—a critical component of the fungal cell membrane—causing the membrane to become leaky and the fungus to die. For vaginal yeast infections, a single 150mg dose is often all that's needed. For more serious or recurrent infections, a longer course is prescribed.

Ergosterol synthesis blockade

Inhibits the fungal enzyme CYP51, preventing the conversion of lanosterol to ergosterol—a sterol essential to the integrity and function of the fungal cell membrane—leading to membrane disruption and fungal cell death.

Broad fungal coverage

Effective against Candida species responsible for most yeast infections as well as Cryptococcus and other pathogens, making it useful across a spectrum of fungal infections from superficial to systemic.

Single-dose convenience for yeast infections

One oral 150mg tablet is clinically proven to treat uncomplicated vaginal yeast infections—eliminating the need for multi-day topical creams and providing systemic coverage that reaches the infection from within.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is one dose really enough for a yeast infection?

For uncomplicated vaginal yeast infections, a single 150mg oral dose is clinically proven to be effective for most people. For recurrent or severe infections, longer courses of multiple doses may be prescribed.

How quickly will my yeast infection symptoms improve?

Most people experience symptom relief within 24 hours, with full resolution typically occurring within 3–7 days of the single dose. If symptoms persist beyond a week, contact your clinician for reevaluation.

Can men take fluconazole for a yeast infection?

Yes. Fluconazole is used to treat penile yeast infections (balanitis) and other candida infections in men. The dose and duration depend on the location and severity of the infection.

What side effects might I experience?

Headache, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea are most common and usually mild. Fluconazole interacts with several medications — particularly blood thinners and certain statins — so a medication review is important before use.

Can I take fluconazole during pregnancy?

Caution is advised. High-dose or repeated fluconazole use during pregnancy has been associated with birth defects. A single low dose may sometimes be used, but always discuss with your clinician first.
