What is Floxin (Ofloxacin)?

Floxin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections including urinary tract infections, pelvic inflammatory disease, sexually transmitted infections such as gonorrhea and chlamydia, respiratory infections, and skin infections. It works by inhibiting the bacterial enzymes DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, which are essential for bacterial DNA replication and repair. Ofloxacin is well-absorbed orally and achieves high concentrations in urine, genital tissue, and the respiratory tract—making it effective for infections in these locations. It's taken once or twice daily depending on the condition being treated.

Dual topoisomerase inhibition

Blocks both DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV in bacteria, preventing DNA unwinding and repair—causing lethal double-strand DNA breaks and bacterial cell death in susceptible gram-positive and gram-negative organisms.

High tissue and urinary concentrations

Ofloxacin achieves high concentrations in the urinary tract, genitourinary tissues, and respiratory tract—the primary sites of the infections it's used to treat—ensuring effective antibacterial activity at the infection site.

Broad STI and respiratory coverage

Effective against the key pathogens responsible for gonorrhea, chlamydia, and community-acquired respiratory infections—making it a clinically versatile antibiotic for outpatient management of multiple infection types.

Frequently Asked Questions

What infections does Floxin treat?

Floxin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic used for urinary tract infections, pelvic inflammatory disease, sexually transmitted infections including gonorrhea and chlamydia, respiratory infections, and skin infections.

Why should I avoid calcium and antacids close to taking Floxin?

Calcium, magnesium, and aluminum in antacids and dairy products bind ofloxacin in the gut and significantly reduce its absorption. Take Floxin at least 2 hours before or 6 hours after these products.

Is there a risk of tendon problems with Floxin?

Yes. Like all fluoroquinolones, Floxin carries an FDA black box warning for tendon rupture — particularly the Achilles tendon. Risk is higher in people over 60, those on corticosteroids, or with kidney, heart, or lung transplants.

What side effects might I experience?

Nausea, diarrhea, headache, dizziness, and insomnia are most common. The black box warning also covers peripheral neuropathy and CNS effects. Report any tendon pain, weakness, or numbness immediately.

Can I take Floxin if I'm pregnant?

Fluoroquinolones are generally avoided during pregnancy due to concerns about effects on fetal cartilage development. Inform your clinician if you're pregnant or breastfeeding before taking any fluoroquinolone.
