Frequently Asked Questions

What causes eyelash thinning or loss?

Eyelash loss (madarosis) can result from chronic eye rubbing, eyelid inflammation (blepharitis), alopecia areata, thyroid disorders, nutritional deficiencies, chemotherapy, certain medications, and aggressive eye makeup removal habits. Identifying the underlying cause guides treatment selection.

What is bimatoprost and how does it work for eyelash growth?

Bimatoprost (Latisse) is the only FDA-approved prescription treatment for eyelash hypotrichosis (inadequate lashes). It extends the growth phase of the eyelash cycle, increasing length, thickness, and darkness. Applied nightly to the upper lash line, results are visible at 8 weeks and maximal at 16 weeks.

Will my eyelashes stay longer after I stop using Latisse?

No — eyelash enhancement from bimatoprost is maintained only with continued use. Lashes gradually return to their baseline appearance within weeks to months of discontinuation. This is an important consideration when deciding to start treatment.

Are there OTC eyelash serums that work as well as Latisse?

OTC serums typically contain peptides, biotin, or other growth-supporting ingredients — with limited clinical evidence compared to bimatoprost. They carry fewer side effect risks but have less predictable results. For patients with true hypotrichosis, prescription bimatoprost has the strongest evidence.

What side effects are associated with eyelash growth treatments?

Bimatoprost may cause periorbital skin darkening, increased iris pigmentation (particularly in light-colored eyes with inadvertent contact), and mild eye irritation. Periorbital fat changes with extended use have been reported. Application only to the upper lash line with a sterile applicator minimizes unintended exposure.
