Frequently Asked Questions

What is computer vision syndrome and what causes it?

Computer vision syndrome (CVS), also called digital eye strain, is a cluster of eye and vision symptoms resulting from prolonged digital screen use — including eyestrain, headache, blurred vision, dry eyes, and neck and shoulder pain. Reduced blink rate, uncorrected refractive error, and poor screen ergonomics are key contributing factors.

Do I need glasses specifically for computer use?

For some people — particularly those in their 40s and beyond experiencing presbyopia — computer glasses or progressive lenses adjusted for intermediate distance significantly reduce strain. Anti-reflective coating reduces glare. An eye exam determines whether a specific prescription for screen work would benefit you.

What screen settings help reduce eye strain?

Reducing screen brightness to match ambient lighting, enabling night mode to reduce blue light in the evening, increasing font size to reduce squinting, positioning the screen 20–28 inches away and slightly below eye level, and reducing screen glare with matte filters or repositioning relative to light sources all help.

Is blue light the main cause of eye strain from screens?

Current evidence does not support blue light as a primary driver of digital eye strain. The more significant contributors are reduced blink rate (causing dry eyes), sustained near focus (accommodative fatigue), and ergonomic factors. Blue-light-blocking glasses may help some individuals — evidence for eye strain specifically is limited.

What side effects are associated with eye strain treatments?

Lubricating eye drops are very well tolerated — preservative-free formulations are preferred for frequent use. Corrective lenses for screen use carry no side effects. Treating dry eye with prescription cyclosporine drops may cause initial burning. The 20-20-20 rule and ergonomic adjustments have no adverse effects.
