Frequently Asked Questions

What causes eye fatigue?

Eye fatigue (asthenopia) most commonly results from prolonged near work — particularly screen use — causing sustained ciliary muscle effort and reduced blink rate. Uncorrected or under-corrected refractive error, dry eyes, poor ergonomics, and inadequate lighting are significant contributing factors.

Is eye fatigue a sign of a serious eye condition?

In most cases, eye fatigue reflects digital eye strain or uncorrected vision rather than a serious underlying condition. Persistent, worsening, or asymmetric symptoms — particularly with visual changes, headache, or double vision — warrant a comprehensive eye exam to rule out other causes.

What is the 20-20-20 rule and does it work?

Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. This allows the ciliary muscle to relax and reduces accommodative fatigue. Evidence supports it as a practical strategy for reducing digital eye strain, though it works best as part of a broader ergonomic approach.

Should I get blue-light-blocking glasses for eye fatigue?

Current evidence does not support blue light as a primary cause of digital eye strain — the benefit of blue-light-blocking lenses for fatigue specifically is not well established. Properly fitted prescription lenses, good screen ergonomics, and dry eye management are more evidence-based interventions.

What side effects are associated with eye fatigue treatments?

Lubricating eye drops are very well tolerated — preservative-free formulations are preferred for frequent use. Prescription glasses or contact lenses for uncorrected refractive error carry no side effects. Anti-fatigue lenses are safe. Treating contributing dry eye with cyclosporine drops may cause initial burning on instillation. Eye Fatigue visit What to expect from a Eye Fatigue visit
