What is the Estradiol Patch?

The Estradiol Patch is a transdermal hormone therapy used to treat symptoms of menopause including hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, and mood changes caused by declining estrogen levels. It delivers estradiol—the primary form of estrogen—continuously through the skin, bypassing the digestive system and liver for a steadier hormone level compared to oral estrogen. Depending on the formulation, patches are changed once or twice weekly. For women with a uterus, a progestin is typically prescribed alongside it to protect the uterine lining.

Transdermal estrogen delivery

Releases estradiol directly through the skin into the bloodstream, bypassing first-pass liver metabolism—producing more stable hormone levels than oral estrogen and potentially reducing certain liver-related risks.

Menopausal symptom relief

Restores estrogen levels that decline during menopause, directly addressing the hormonal deficiency responsible for hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, sleep disruption, and mood instability.

Steady-state hormonal control

Unlike pills that create peaks and troughs in hormone levels throughout the day, the patch provides continuous, consistent estradiol delivery—reducing symptom fluctuation and making hormone levels easier to manage and adjust.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often do I change the estradiol patch?

Depending on the formulation, patches are changed either twice weekly (every 3–4 days) or once weekly. Always rotate the application site with each change to reduce skin irritation at any one location.

Where do I apply the patch?

Apply to clean, dry, intact skin on the lower abdomen, hip, or buttock — below the waistline. Avoid the breasts, irritated or oily skin, and areas where clothing rubs frequently.

Do I still need a progestin if I use the estradiol patch?

If you have a uterus, yes. Estrogen therapy without a progestin increases the risk of uterine cancer. Your clinician will prescribe a progestin alongside the patch to protect the uterine lining.

What side effects might I experience?

Skin reactions at the patch site — redness, itching, irritation — are the most common. Breast tenderness, headache, nausea, and mood changes can also occur. Rotating sites with each change reduces skin reactions.

What if the patch falls off?

Try to reapply the same patch if it's still sticky. If it won't adhere, apply a new patch to a different site and continue on the original schedule. Contact your clinician or pharmacist if you're unsure what to do.
