What is Estradiol (Estrace)?

Estrace is an oral estrogen medication containing estradiol—the primary form of estrogen produced by the ovaries—used to treat menopausal symptoms including hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, and mood changes. It's also used in hormone therapy for transgender women and in cases of premature ovarian insufficiency. Taken as a daily tablet, it restores estrogen levels that decline during and after menopause. For women with a uterus, a progestin is typically prescribed alongside it to protect the uterine lining from overstimulation.

Estrogen receptor activation

Binds to estrogen receptors throughout the body—in the brain, bones, cardiovascular system, and genitourinary tract—restoring the hormonal signaling that declines with menopause and drives its wide range of symptoms.

Hot flash and vasomotor relief

Directly addresses the hypothalamic thermoregulatory instability caused by estrogen deficiency, reducing the frequency and severity of hot flashes and night sweats that disrupt daily life and sleep.

Genitourinary and bone health

Restores vaginal tissue health, reduces urinary symptoms associated with genitourinary syndrome of menopause, and helps maintain bone density—protecting against the accelerated bone loss that follows estrogen decline after menopause.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is oral Estrace different from the estradiol patch?

Estrace is swallowed daily and processed through the liver before reaching the bloodstream — which can affect certain proteins and clotting factors. The patch delivers estradiol directly through the skin, bypassing the liver entirely.

Do I need a progestin alongside Estrace?

If you have a uterus, yes. Estrogen therapy without a progestin increases the risk of uterine lining overgrowth and endometrial cancer. Your clinician will prescribe a progestin to take alongside Estrace.

How long before Estrace relieves hot flashes?

Many people notice improvement in hot flashes and night sweats within the first 2–4 weeks of consistent daily use. Full symptom relief typically develops over 4–8 weeks at an effective dose.

What side effects might I experience?

Breast tenderness, bloating, nausea, headache, and mood changes are most commonly reported. These often improve after the first 2–3 months as hormone levels stabilize. Irregular spotting can occur initially.

Is Estrace the same as bioidentical estrogen?

Yes. Estradiol (the active ingredient in Estrace) is bioidentical — meaning it has the same molecular structure as the estrogen your body naturally produces. It differs from conjugated equine estrogens found in some other HRT products.
