What is EpiPen?

EpiPen is an epinephrine auto-injector prescribed for people at risk of severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) from insect stings, food allergies, medications, or unknown triggers. Anaphylaxis is a life-threatening emergency that can cause the airways to swell shut and blood pressure to drop dangerously within minutes. EpiPen delivers a pre-measured dose of epinephrine into the outer thigh, rapidly reversing these reactions while emergency medical care is obtained. It's a first-response tool—not a substitute for calling 911 and seeking immediate emergency care.

Immediate anaphylaxis reversal

Epinephrine rapidly constricts blood vessels, raises blood pressure, relaxes airway muscles, and reduces swelling—directly countering the life-threatening cascade triggered by severe allergic reactions.

Auto-injector design

Delivers an exact, pre-measured dose through a spring-loaded needle with a single press to the outer thigh—designed to be used quickly and correctly even under the extreme stress of an allergic emergency.

Bridge to emergency care

EpiPen buys critical time by stabilizing the body's response to anaphylaxis, but it is not a cure—emergency medical evaluation is always required after use, as symptoms can return.

Frequently Asked Questions

When exactly should I use my EpiPen?

Use your EpiPen at the first signs of a severe allergic reaction — throat tightening, difficulty breathing, rapid drop in blood pressure, or severe widespread hives. Don't wait to see if symptoms improve on their own.

Where do I inject it?

Inject into the outer thigh — through clothing if necessary. The outer thigh provides the fastest absorption. Avoid injecting into a vein, buttock, or finger, as these locations carry higher risk.

What do I do after using the EpiPen?

Call 911 immediately after using it — even if symptoms improve. Epinephrine is temporary, and reactions can return. Emergency evaluation is always required after anaphylaxis regardless of how you feel afterward.

What side effects might I occur from epinephrine?

Racing heart, shakiness, anxiety, pallor, and headache are common immediately after injection — these are expected effects of epinephrine and typically resolve within minutes. They are not reasons to avoid using it when needed.

How should I store my EpiPen?

Store at room temperature, away from extreme heat, cold, and direct sunlight. Check the expiration date regularly and replace before it expires. Always carry two — reactions sometimes require more than one dose.
