What is Ella?

Ella is a prescription emergency contraceptive taken as a single pill to prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex or contraceptive failure. It's effective for up to 5 days (120 hours) after the event—longer than levonorgestrel-based options like Plan B, and with more consistent effectiveness throughout that window. Ella works primarily by delaying or inhibiting ovulation, preventing the egg from being released before sperm can no longer fertilize it. It's most effective when taken as soon as possible and does not terminate an established pregnancy.
