What is Eliquis (Apixaban)?

Eliquis is a direct oral anticoagulant (blood thinner) used to reduce the risk of stroke and blood clots in people with atrial fibrillation, and to treat or prevent deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE). It works by directly blocking Factor Xa, a key protein in the blood clotting cascade. Unlike older anticoagulants like warfarin, Eliquis doesn't require regular blood monitoring or frequent dose adjustments, and it has fewer food and drug interactions. It's taken twice daily and is one of the most prescribed anticoagulants available.

Direct Factor Xa inhibition

Selectively blocks Factor Xa, a central step in the coagulation cascade that converts prothrombin to thrombin—interrupting clot formation without completely eliminating the body's ability to clot when needed.

Stroke prevention in AFib

In atrial fibrillation, the heart's irregular rhythm can cause blood to pool and clot in the left atrial appendage. Eliquis prevents these clots from forming and traveling to the brain, significantly reducing stroke risk.

Monitoring-free convenience

Unlike warfarin, Eliquis works predictably at standard doses without requiring routine INR blood tests—simplifying long-term anticoagulation management and improving quality of life for patients.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need regular blood tests with Eliquis?

No routine INR monitoring is required — a major advantage over warfarin. Eliquis works predictably at standard doses. Your clinician may check kidney function periodically since it influences drug clearance.

What happens if I miss a dose?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember on the same day. Do not double up to make up for a missed dose. Consistent twice-daily dosing is important to maintain adequate anticoagulation throughout the day.

Can I stop taking Eliquis if I feel fine?

No. Stopping Eliquis abruptly significantly increases the risk of stroke or blood clot formation — particularly in people with atrial fibrillation. Never stop without discussing it with your clinician first.

What side effects might I experience?

Bleeding is the primary risk — this can range from easy bruising to more serious internal bleeding. Unusual bleeding, prolonged bleeding from cuts, blood in urine or stool, or severe headache should be reported immediately.

Is there an antidote if I bleed seriously while on Eliquis?

Yes. Andexanet alfa (Andexxa) is an FDA-approved reversal agent for apixaban in the event of serious uncontrolled bleeding. Emergency rooms are increasingly equipped with this reversal option.
