What is Elimite?

Elimite is a prescription-strength 5% Elimite used to treat scabies—a highly contagious skin infestation caused by tiny mites that burrow into the skin and cause intense itching. It's applied from the neck down to the entire body, left on for 8–14 hours, and then washed off—typically as a single-treatment application. Permethrin is a synthetic pyrethroid that kills both adult scabies mites and their eggs by disrupting their nervous system. Prescription-strength Elimite is more concentrated than OTC permethrin products and is the first-line treatment for scabies.

Sodium channel disruption in mites

Permethrin prolongs the opening of sodium channels in the nerve cell membranes of scabies mites, causing continuous nerve firing, paralysis, and death of both adult mites and their eggs.

Ovicidal action

Kills not only adult Sarcoptes scabiei mites but also their eggs—reducing the likelihood of reinfestation from eggs that survive a treatment that only affects adult mites.
