What is Elavil (Amitriptyline)?

Elavil is a tricyclic antidepressant (TCA) used at higher doses to treat depression and at lower doses for a range of other conditions including chronic pain, neuropathic pain, migraine prevention, fibromyalgia, and insomnia. It works by blocking the reuptake of serotonin and norepinephrine while also blocking histamine and muscarinic receptors—producing both antidepressant and sedating effects. Despite being one of the older antidepressants, Amitriptyline remains widely used because of its effectiveness for pain conditions and its well-understood profile after decades of clinical use.

Blocks reuptake transporters for both serotonin and norepinephrine, increasing their availability to regulate mood and modulate pain signaling in the central nervous system—relevant to both its antidepressant and analgesic effects.
