Frequently Asked Questions

Why would I be referred for an EEG?

An electroencephalogram (EEG) measures electrical brain activity and is most commonly ordered to evaluate suspected seizure disorder, characterize known epilepsy, investigate unexplained loss of consciousness, assess encephalopathy, or evaluate sleep-related neurological events.

What does an EEG involve?

Small electrodes are attached to the scalp with a conductive paste. Brain electrical activity is recorded — typically over 20–40 minutes for a routine study. You'll be asked to breathe deeply and may be exposed to flashing lights (photic stimulation). The test is non-invasive and painless.

How should I prepare for an EEG?

Wash your hair the night before and don't apply products. Your clinician may ask you to be sleep-deprived before a sleep-deprived EEG — follow their specific instructions. Continue all medications unless specifically instructed otherwise. Avoid caffeine on the day of the test if instructed.

Can an EEG diagnose epilepsy?

A routine EEG captures only a brief window of brain activity — a normal EEG does not rule out epilepsy, and abnormal findings don't confirm it. Epilepsy is a clinical diagnosis supported by EEG findings in context. Prolonged ambulatory or video-EEG monitoring may be needed when routine EEG is inconclusive.

Are there any risks associated with an EEG?

Routine EEG is non-invasive and carries no significant risks. Photic stimulation may rarely trigger a seizure in individuals with photosensitive epilepsy — this is conducted with appropriate precautions in a monitored setting. Scalp electrode application may cause mild, temporary skin irritation. EEG Referral visit What to expect from a EEG Referral visit
