Frequently Asked Questions

Why would I need an echocardiogram?

An echocardiogram (echo) is ordered to evaluate heart structure and function — including heart valves, chambers, wall motion, and pumping efficiency. Common indications include a new heart murmur, shortness of breath, suspected heart failure, prior to certain procedures, or follow-up of known cardiac conditions.

What is the difference between a standard echo and a stress echo?

A standard (resting) echocardiogram assesses heart function at rest. A stress echo evaluates heart function during exercise or medication-induced stress — used to detect coronary artery disease or assess how the heart responds to exertion. The appropriate type is determined by the clinical question being answered.

What should I expect during the procedure?

A standard echocardiogram takes 30–60 minutes. You'll lie on your side while a technician applies a gel to your chest and moves an ultrasound probe over the area. The procedure is non-invasive and painless. A cardiologist interprets the images and reports findings to your clinician.

Do I need to prepare for an echocardiogram?

No special preparation is needed for a standard resting echocardiogram. For a stress echo, you'll be asked to avoid eating for several hours beforehand. Wear comfortable clothing. Continue regular medications unless specifically instructed otherwise by your clinician.

Are there any risks associated with an echocardiogram?

Standard echocardiography uses ultrasound — there is no radiation and no known risk. Stress echocardiography carries a small risk from the stress component itself, monitored closely during the procedure. Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) is more invasive and carries additional considerations discussed at the time of referral.
