Frequently Asked Questions

What causes a feeling of pressure or fullness in the ear?

Ear pressure most commonly results from Eustachian tube dysfunction — impaired equalization between the middle ear and the environment — often from upper respiratory infections, allergies, or altitude changes. Other causes include middle ear fluid (otitis media with effusion), earwax impaction, and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction.

Will ear pressure go away on its own?

Pressure related to a cold or mild Eustachian tube dysfunction typically resolves within 1–2 weeks as the underlying cause clears. Persistent or painful ear pressure, hearing changes, or pressure following air travel that doesn't resolve with swallowing or yawning warrants clinical evaluation.

Can allergies cause ear pressure?

Yes — allergic rhinitis causes Eustachian tube inflammation and dysfunction, contributing to chronic ear fullness. Treating nasal allergies with intranasal corticosteroids and antihistamines often improves associated ear pressure significantly.

What can I do to relieve ear pressure from Eustachian tube dysfunction?

The Valsalva maneuver (gentle nose-pinching while exhaling with a closed mouth), chewing gum, yawning, and nasal decongestants (short-term) can temporarily relieve Eustachian tube-related pressure. Nasal steroid sprays reduce mucosal inflammation contributing to tube dysfunction over time.

What side effects are associated with ear pressure treatments?

Nasal decongestants should not be used for more than 3 days — rebound congestion develops. Intranasal steroids are very well tolerated. OTC decongestants (pseudoephedrine) may cause elevated blood pressure and insomnia. Ear tubes (tympanostomy tubes) — used for recurrent or persistent middle ear effusion — carry small risks of persistent perforation and drainage.
