What is Dutasteride (Avodart)?

Dutasteride is a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor prescribed to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)—an enlarged prostate that causes urinary symptoms. Unlike Flomax, which relaxes prostate muscle, Dutasteride actually shrinks the prostate over time by blocking the conversion of testosterone to DHT—the hormone primarily responsible for prostate growth. It's also used off-label for male pattern baldness. Because it works by reducing prostate size rather than relaxing muscle, it takes 3–6 months before significant symptom improvement is noticed, but its effects are more durable.

Dual 5-alpha reductase inhibition

Blocks both type 1 and type 2 isoforms of 5-alpha reductase, more completely suppressing the conversion of testosterone to DHT than finasteride—reducing serum DHT levels by approximately 90% and causing meaningful prostate shrinkage.

Prostate volume reduction

By addressing the hormonal driver of prostate growth rather than just relaxing smooth muscle, Dutasteride reduces actual prostate size over months—improving urinary flow and reducing the risk of acute urinary retention and the need for surgery.

Long-term BPH management

As prostate size decreases with continued use, symptom improvement builds over time and is sustained—making it a strong option for long-term disease management in men with significantly enlarged prostates.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long before Dutasteride improves urinary symptoms?

Dutasteride works slowly — it typically takes 3–6 months before meaningful symptom improvement is noticed as the prostate gradually shrinks. Full benefit may take up to 12 months of consistent daily use.

Does Dutasteride prevent prostate cancer?

Dutasteride has been studied for prostate cancer risk reduction and shows some benefit, but it is not FDA-approved for this use. It can lower PSA levels — inform your urologist that you take it before any PSA testing.

Can women or children handle dutasteride capsules?

No. Dutasteride is absorbed through the skin — women of childbearing age and children should not handle crushed or broken capsules, as the drug can cause serious harm to a developing male fetus.

What side effects might I experience?

Decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, reduced ejaculate volume, and breast tenderness or enlargement are the most commonly reported effects. These are related to the reduction in DHT that Dutasteride produces.

How is Dutasteride different from Flomax for BPH?

They work differently. Flomax relaxes prostate muscle for quick symptom relief. Dutasteride shrinks the prostate over months for longer-term benefit. They are often prescribed together for men with significantly enlarged prostates.
