What is Dupixent (Dupilumab)?

Dupixent is a biologic injectable medication used to treat moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis (eczema), asthma, chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps, eosinophilic esophagitis, and prurigo nodularis. It works by blocking two key proteins—IL-4 and IL-13—that drive the Type 2 inflammatory response responsible for these conditions. Rather than broadly suppressing the immune system, Dupixent precisely targets this specific inflammatory pathway, making it effective with a more targeted safety profile than traditional immunosuppressants. It's injected every two weeks and often produces significant symptom improvement within weeks.

IL-4 and IL-13 dual blockade

Targets the shared receptor subunit for IL-4 and IL-13, blocking both cytokines that drive Type 2 (allergic) inflammation—the primary immune pathway underlying eczema, allergic asthma, nasal polyps, and related conditions.

Skin barrier restoration

By suppressing the IL-4/IL-13 signaling that disrupts the skin's structural proteins and microbiome, Dupixent helps restore the skin barrier in eczema patients—reducing itch, redness, and recurrent infections.

Precision immune targeting

Unlike oral corticosteroids or traditional immunosuppressants that broadly suppress immune function, Dupixent selectively blocks a specific inflammatory pathway—delivering disease control without the systemic immune suppression side effects.

Frequently Asked Questions

How quickly does Dupixent work for eczema?

Many people with eczema notice meaningful itch reduction within 2–4 weeks. Visible skin clearing typically continues improving over the first 3–6 months of every-two-week injections.

Do I need to refrigerate Dupixent?

Yes. Dupixent should be stored in the refrigerator. Before injecting, allow it to reach room temperature by removing from the refrigerator 30–45 minutes beforehand — injecting cold medication is more uncomfortable.

Is Dupixent a steroid?

No. Dupixent is a biologic antibody — it works by targeting specific immune pathways rather than broadly suppressing the immune system the way steroids do. This is why it can be used long-term without the typical steroid side effects.

What side effects might I experience?

Injection site reactions, conjunctivitis (eye inflammation), and cold sores are the most commonly reported effects. Conjunctivitis is particularly notable in eczema patients — eye drops may be recommended if this occurs.

Will I need Dupixent forever?

For conditions like eczema and asthma that are chronic, long-term or indefinite use is common for maintaining disease control. Your clinician will reassess periodically to determine whether continued treatment remains appropriate.
