Frequently Asked Questions

What causes dry mouth?

Dry mouth (xerostomia) most commonly results from medication side effects — antihistamines, antidepressants, antihypertensives, and anticholinergics are among the most common culprits. Other causes include Sjögren's syndrome, radiation therapy to the head and neck, dehydration, mouth breathing, and anxiety.

Is dry mouth just uncomfortable or does it cause real harm?

Dry mouth has significant health consequences beyond discomfort. Saliva is essential for neutralizing oral acids, remineralizing teeth, and controlling oral bacteria. Chronic xerostomia dramatically increases tooth decay risk, causes difficulty chewing and swallowing, contributes to oral infections, and significantly affects quality of life and nutrition.

What can I do to relieve dry mouth?

Sipping water frequently, using alcohol-free mouth rinses, sugar-free gum or lozenges to stimulate saliva, and sleeping with a humidifier provide relief. Prescription saliva substitutes and salivary stimulants (pilocarpine, cevimeline) are available for significant or treatment-refractory xerostomia.

Should I change my medication if it's causing dry mouth?

A medication review is worthwhile — often a different agent within the same class can achieve the therapeutic goal with less anticholinergic effect. This decision should always be made with clinical guidance. Switching medications is not always possible, but when it is, it often produces significant improvement.

What side effects are associated with dry mouth treatments?

Sugar-free lozenges and gum are very safe. Pilocarpine and cevimeline (muscarinic agonists) may cause sweating, flushing, urinary frequency, and GI symptoms — contraindicated in certain eye and cardiovascular conditions. Fluoride treatments for cavity prevention are very well tolerated and important for dental protection. Dry Mouth (Xerostomia) visit What to expect from a Dry Mouth (Xerostomia) visit
